FIRST SEMESTER STARS: GIRLS EDITION
It was an entertaining year, but as 2009 winds down, in honor of the first part of the girls basketball ending I’ve compiled a list of basketball players who’ve had the best 2009. And may their good fortunes continue when play resumes in the next decade.
HALLIE CHRISTOFFERSON: EXIRA
My jaw was dropped the entire time I was researching this 6-foot-3-inch center from Exira. I remember writing about her last year and she was great, but this year she’s been sensational.
Here’s a list; she is currently second in the state in scoring with 28.6 points per game, she’s first in the state in rebounding, with a mesmerizing 17 per game, she’s fifth in the state in blocks with 4.6 per game, and 10th in steals, with nearly six per contest.
Those are Wilt Chamberlain type numbers.
She played seven games this season, these are the four most impressive:
-In a 74-25 victory over Ankeny Christian Academy Christofferson recorded a modest 22 points to go along with 14 rebounds, nine assists, seven steals and five blocks, I yi yi.
-During a 59-28 win over Orient-Macksburg, the senior had 37 points and 19 rebounds.
-In a 74-45 win against Iowa Christian Academy she had a remarkable 38 points, 16 rebounds and seven steals.
-Her latest mind-boggling game came in a 72-36 win over CAM, Anita in which she recorded 29 points, 22 rebounds, five steals and six blocks.
KAYLEE MEHRHOFF: CENTERVILLE
Christofferson’s season bio is a tough act to follow, but Centerville senior Kaylee Mehrnoff is having a great season of her own to speak of.
The 5-foot-8-inch power forward is averaging 22.6 points per contest to go along with 9.7 rebounds and two blocks. She also has shown the ability to knock down the three ball. She makes nearly two per game and is shooting 32 percent from beyond the arch.
Her most impressive performance of 2009 came in a 44-41 loss against Fort Madison. Mehrnoff recorded 31 points and 19 rebounds in the game, with five blocks to boot.
In a 59-45 win against Oskaloosa she poured in 26 points to go along with 18 rebounds.
And in a 56-45 triumph over Missouri’s Scotland County the senior filled the state sheet with 27 points, eight rebounds five blocks and four steals.
TARA GRAY: GMG, GARWIN
This junior has a lot of upside to her right now. Not only does she have a whole year and a half left to sharpen her game before college, but she’s a 5-foot-11-inch point guard. I wouldn’t be surprised if college coaches are currently salivating over her talents.
In 2009 she averaged 21.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, nearly five steals and three blocks per game.
The first game of the season was a 49-36 loss to BCLUW, and Gray had 25 of her teams 36 points while not missing any of the nine shots she took, including four three’s. She also had eight blocks in the loss.
And during a 69-51 loss to South Hardin Gray put together a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds, and added four steals as well.
CAROLYN HOLM: SIGOURNEY
Ms. Holm is Sigourney’s fabulous 6-foot center and is a large reason why her team was 6-1 in 2009. She’s averaging a double-double with 21.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, and is very precise while shooting, making sixty percent of the shots she attempts.
In a 53-26 victory over HLV, Victor, Holm had 25 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four steals and three blocks.
Holm scored 29 points and snagged 14 rebounds during a 52-37 win against Montezuma.
And most recently she poured in a season high 30 points and 17 rebounds in a 50-45 triumph over Iowa Valley.
LINDSAY HOEHNS: TWIN CEDARS
This 5-foot-9-inch senior is averaging 20.9 points and 11.6 rebounds a game for the Sabers. She’s also a thief on the hardwood, averaging 3.6 steals per contest.
During a 63-36 loss to Carlisle the senior recorded 22 points and 16 rebounds. She’s had a double-double in every game but one that she’s played in this season.
And her best game of the season was during a 72-21 win over Seymour. The small forward scored a season high 29 points and recorded 12 rebounds and six steals.
In the three games that Hoehns didn’t play in the Sabres were 1-2 including a 97-11 shellacking by Martensdale St. Marys.
