WHERE ARE THEY NOW? TIM CARVER

Urbandale High School: 1992

September 30, 2009

Tim Carver’s life has come full circle.

The 1992 Urbandale graduate is now an assistant principal there and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

"We’ve got great people here and it’s a great community, I appreciate everything it has to offer,” Carver said.

As a senior in 1992 Carver had enough success on the field as a linebacker to earn him Elite All-State honors. And he was apart of a dynamic team.

“On that team were guys like Ross Verba, who played in the N.F.L. for a number of years and Casey Blake, who plays for the L.A. Dodgers,” Carver said. "So I built some good connections from that team.”

Although he was good enough to be selected to the elite team, his college prospects were limited.

“Out of high school I played linebacker at about 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds, so I didn’t have a lot of schools knocking at my door wanting me to come play for them,” Carver said.

He did send tapes to the likes of Iowa and Notre Dame, as well as a host of smaller schools. And as it turned out, Division 1AA’s Eastern Illinois was the only school to offer him a football scholarship.

Carver accepted and immediately excelled. He started every game but one throughout his career. And the “undersized” linebacker became the all-time leader in tackles at Eastern Illinois, and is second all-time in what was the Gateway Conference and now the Missouri Valley Conference.

Carver was recently inducted into the Eastern Illinois Hall of Fame and is currently a nominee for the Missouri Valley Conference Silver Anniversary Team. Needless to say, he was great success as a college football player.

“I was fortunate,” Carver said. "I was kind of undersized to play middle linebacker, but I had some real good coach’s and played behind some real good defensive lines. And the way our defense worked is that it channeled a lot of balls to me and I just had to make the plays.” And the plays were made more often than not.

As a junior Carver was a third team All-America selection, and as a senior he was First-Team All- America. Which than begs the question; could this undersized linebacker play in the NFL?

“I think I could’ve gone to a combine or something like that, I didn’t,” Carver said. “I realized that wasn’t where my future really lied. I did have an opportunity to go to Europe and play, but I passed on that, and decided to get into my career that I’m in now, education.”

Carver received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Eastern Illinois in speech communication with a teaching certification in 1996. And then his Master of Education from Iowa State in 2002. Most recently he received his Education Specialist Degree from Drake in 2009.

He began teaching right after graduating from Eastern Illinois when he was substituting at Urbandale and shortly after got a full-time teaching gig at Winterset where he stayed for two years. He was then fortunate enough to be invited back to Urbandale to teach, where he was a teacher and coach for four years before becoming an administrator in 2002.

Currently Carver is an assistant principal in Urbandale where he resides with his wife and two kids of seven and four. And it seems he couldn’t be happier with where he’s at.

“Urbandale’s a unique community, it’s a large school but with a small town feel. And I’m just happy to have had a tremendous experience growing up here and a lot of those people I’ve grown up with have stayed in the community or have come back to the community,” Carver said. “It’s a neat opportunity to help my kids to be a part of the kind of experience that I had and my nieces and nephews as well.”
