North's Creon Reed has been shooting lights out since winter break. He comes in at #4 with this buzzer beater from near the center court logo against Waukee on Tuesday.

With Barnes stealing the show in Ames, it's easy for this pair to fall under the radar. They found our radar this week with top play #3, as Michael Weber finds Doug McDermott with a no-look pass for a dunk against Southeast Polk Tuesday night.

Perhaps our game of the night took place at DCG Friday night. With the game tied in the final seconds of OT, the Bombers' Jessie Wheeler picked her opponent's pocket, outlet the ball from the seat of her pants, and Taylor Greenfield lays it in while drawing the foul. That sealed the win and puts Ballard in our #2 spot this week!

Top Play of the Week!

Apparently it was 'Harrison Barnes Poster Night' in Southeast Polk on Tuesday.

Despite the loss on Tuesday to Southeast Polk, Hoover makes it into our top plays.  Reggie White's putback as time expired, sent this one to overtime.

It's almost impossible to have a top plays of the week segment without a highlight from Ames' Harrison Barnes.  We have two for you here, first an alley-oop from Michael Weber, then off a miss, Barnes finishes it off with a tip slam.

Top Play of the Week!

Congratulations to Lindsay Hoehns, recording 2,000 career points in this game against Lamoni. She becomes the 4th girl in Iowa high school history to record 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.

If someone told me before the High School Hoops season began that after Hoover lost their head basketball coach Charles Zanders to an assistant position at Simpson College that the Huskies would start the 2009-10 season 10-0, I would have called that someone absolutely crazy.

Especially after Hoover's 2008-09 season ended with a fight against Urbandale in a sub-state final game at Dowling High School.

A BIG reason why Hoover has started so fast out of the gate is the play of senior guard Quincy King. King leads the squad with 14 points per contest and shoots 49% from the field. He also dishes out nearly 4 assists per contest (only 13 turnovers) and has swiped his opponents 23 times.

High School Hoops are back in full swing.  North Carolina head coach Roy Williams came to Ames to take in an intense battle between his prize recruit Harrison Barnes' Ames Little Cyclones and the Valley Tigers.  High School Playbook has doubleheader action from the Tiger Pit, as well as a twin bill between East and Lincoln.

Roosevelt has had a brutal start to their season, playing their first four games against ranked teams, and winning only one of them. It didn’t get any easier tonight as the seventh ranked East Scarlets came to visit.

East set the tone early with a 8-0 run, and they never let up. The Roughriders were finally able to get on the board three minutes into the game after East junior Nijay Gaines picked up a technical foul and Creighton recruit Riley Norman swished two free-throws. East's smothering defense had the Roughriders flustered early and often though, and they held a 18-6 advantage after the first quarter.

The second quarter was the same story. Roosevelt’s first points came with 1:48 remaining in the half, once again from a Norman free-throw. The Scarlets dominated the first half on both ends of the floor and held a 26-9 advantage after the second quarter.

Roosevelt came out with some fire in the third quarter and Riley Norman went on a 5-0 run of her own. Norman, who was very quiet in the first half, was very active in the third quarter, she was deflecting balls, dishing assists, scoring and had a couple blocks. The Roughriders had a chance to cut the deficit to single digits but became careless with the basketball late in the quarter and East took advantage. The Scarlets led 38-18 going into the fourth, making the last quarter relatively meaningless.

As the stands began to fill for the boy’s game to follow, both teams weaned out their starters and cleared the benches. Not a lot changed as far as the competitiveness of the game. The Scarlets wound up coming to Roosevelt and leaving with a convincing and dominating 26 point triumph; 51-26.

The Scarlets have plenty to rejoice about with the team they put on the floor tonight. The terrific-trio of Shronda Butts, Nijay Gaines and Markisha Wright is a very impressive group. All scored in double-digits and all bring a different and important flavor to the team. And all are juniors, next year will be scary, and this team may have a reasonable shot at back-to-back state tournament appearances, if not more.

Wright was the best player on the floor tonight. The 6-foot 2-inch post-player is lanky and has a polished game. She provided plenty of blocks, steals and rebounds to go along with her 10 points.

Gaines is a passionate player, see the technical foul in the first quarter, and plays hard all the time. She finished with a game high 13 points and is a perfect compliment in the post to Wright.

And guard Shronda Butts is a warrior herself. She’s confident and quick to pull the trigger. She can get to the basket with ease has great court vision and plays much larger than her frame would suggest.

Point guard Sharnae Lamar is no slouch herself. She is also a junior and provides incredible ball-handling skills and court vision for this outstanding Scarlet team.

I may have caught the Roughriders on a bad night, but their pre-season ranking of 12 (also their current rank) seems to be high. As noted earlier, they have yet to lose to a team not in the top 10. And their one win was against Dowling, who is currently ranked 13. A tough start without question, but they'll need to shape up if any state tournament apperarance is in their future.

Capital Orthopedic Game Of The Week

This week's KCCI's Iowa Beef "Athlete of the Week" had a very efficient game against Indianola on Friday night.

Cassie Garrett, a senior guard at Waukee High School scored 13 points, while only attempting 5 Field Goals. Garrett made 6-9 free throw attempts and also had 5 rebounds, 5 steals, and 2 assists. The senior guard finished the game second on the team in scoring (Kiersten Orton had 14) and helped her Warrior squad to a 62-41 victory over Indianola.

Roosevelt headed north to Ames, taking on Harrison Barnes and the Little Cyclones.

The Roosevelt and Ames girls were also in action Friday night.

Lincoln High School showcased a boy/girl doubleheader featuring the Railsplitters and the Johnston Dragons.

The Waukee and Indianola girl's teams also did battle Friday night.

Southern Cal was only able to muster 204 total yards of offense compared to Newman Catholic’s 321, yet they were able to will themselves to a 28-27 OT victory and claim the 2009 Class A championship.

Quarterback Greg Meyer completed four of seven passes for 111 yards and a touchdown.  Running back Austin Blair also found the endzone for the Mustangs. He recorded 35 yards on 10 carries.

Kirby Vogel led the Mustang defense with 8 tackles.
