FINAL
DOWLING CATHOLIC (9-6) 66
MARSHALLTOWN (8-6) 52
-CHANSE CREEKMUR DUNK-
One month ago a Dowling win over Marshalltown would have been considered an upset. However, now the Maroons are hot, wining six of their last eight games coming into this one. I can safely say that tonight’s win over the once-ranked Bobcats was no upset. For the record, one of those Dowling losses in the last eight games was against Ames, so, uh, that one doesn’t really count.

The Bobcats started off playing like a team that really wanted to win this game. In particular, senior quarterback turned star-forward Chanse Creekmur, who had the Bobcats first seven points. With three minutes remaining in the first, the sluggish Maroons trailed 12-6. That was ensued by a 6-0 Dowling run to tie the game. The first quarter would end Marshalltown, 14, Dowling, 12.
The game remained close and greatly uneventful throughout the second quarter. The Bobcats committed many careless turnovers, with a fair share coming at the hands of Creekmur-who didn’t score in the second. Dowling wasn’t exactly making the Bobcats pay for their mistakes, but they were able to open up a 27-21 lead with two minutes remaining in the half. Going into the locker room, the Maroons led 31-27.

Dowling’s second leading scorer, junior Alex Savage, was held scoreless in the first half-but did contribute with a few nice assists. The Maroons leading scorer, Ryan Coon, had a team high 10 at half, and Brad Chelleen added seven.
Marshalltown junior Trent Trownbridge matched his season average with 11 at halftime-which included nine points from downtown. Creekmur scored seven, all in the first two minutes of the half.
After Dowling started the second half on a 6-0 run, the game would never be the same. From that point on, the Bobcats were always a tad out of striking distance. Creekmur went on another run, scoring five straight and bringing his team back to within 10, 42-32, with five minutes remaining in the third. That was immediately followed by yet another 6-0 Dowling run. At the end of the third quarter Dowling held a 48-38 lead. Savage, who didn’t score in the first half, scored eight in the third quarter. Creekmur had eight points in the third as well.

It was a lackluster fourth for Marshalltown. Turnover after turnover and missed shot after missed shot allotted Dowling to stave off the feisty Bobcats and garner their seventh win in nine games.
Creekmur led the Bobcats with 18 points, however it was a horrible shooting night for him, and he had too many turnovers. Trownbridge finished with 16 points and Nick Thimesch added 10.
Dowling’s Ryan Coon led all scorers with 22; he was 11-14 from the floor. Brad Chelleen scored 11 and pulled down a team high six rebounds. Junior Alex Savage scored 10 points, all in the second half, and had a team high five assists.
